Authentication goes beyond a date code
A serial number, date stamp, authenticity card or original packaging cannot establish authenticity on its own. These details form part of a broader assessment of the item.
Markings and identification systems vary by brand, style and production year. Vintage pieces may also have missing or worn labels. Our authentication review considers the item as a whole.

Date codes & serial number guides
Use these references to explore an item’s production period. Dates are approximate where indicated. A code, stamp or identification plate is one part of authentication, not proof on its own.
Louis Vuitton date codes

Factory letters relate to manufacturing location, not a unique bag. Codes can become worn or disappear with lining repairs.
Chanel serial numbers
Match the beginning of the serial number to the approximate production period below. X represents a digit. Resale reference dates overlap and may differ, particularly near transitions. Early stickers can contain six digits; later stickers contain seven or eight.

From 2021, Chanel began replacing handbag stickers and matching authenticity cards with identification plates. Small leather goods followed a different transition. Missing stickers or cards alone do not establish whether a piece is authentic.
Hermès date stamps
Read the letter together with its surrounding shape. The same letter can refer to different years. Additional artisan and workshop marks are separate from the year stamp.
